University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino told The Courier-Journal this is “a big weekend” for the Cardinals’ basketball program.

But Pitino said it’s not a make-or-break type situation, instead calling the weekend with five top recruiting targets in town a “navigation weekend.”

“We need to get to know these guys,” Pitino said. “It will show us what direction we need to head in with other recruits. It gives us a little feel for what direction we will need to head in when we bring the next three or four guys in.”

Bowling Green forward Chane Behanan, North Carolina guard Deuce Bello and California guard Josiah Turner are in Louisville on official visits, while North Carolina forward Quincy Miller and Jeffersontown’s Zach Price are on unofficial visits. Price has committed to U of L.

Pitino can’t talk about specific recruits because of NCAA rules but said his staff was “just going to play it by ear,” as far as getting any commitments during the weekend.

“It’s right now about putting together five guys that are going to play the best together for our program,” Pitino said. “Five guys that will mesh together and be the best for us.

“We do feel good about where we are (with the different options) right now. But we have work to do.”
